"Waiting On The Holy Spirit - Getting Our Hearts Ready for Pentecost"
"1 Samuel 10:6 - The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy"
Good morning, good morning, good morning. Happy Monday. If you are joining us today, and we got together yesterday, I hope you're a great weekend. We are all looking forward to this week. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we come before you today.
We thank you for your goodness and your mercy toward us. We thank you that this day you have prepared and made it for us. We are going to rejoice in it and be glad in it. We are grateful for redeeming us from the curse of the law.
But even though we were not crucified with Christ, yet through you, we were crucified with Christ, but yet we live. We thank you for salvation and this opportunity to serve you, to love you, and to follow your statutes.
We know there are so many people in this world who are lost. Who have no idea of these Jesus that we follow. So we consider the privilege that we are walking with you, that we are hearing directions, that we are hearing you as you commune with us and as we find ourselves in this walk.
We bless you, Father, for who you are to us, Father, and us as your children, Lord, we pray that as we look into your word, as we devote this morning time to you, and we continue to bless our spiritual souls, because our desire is to grow, and our desire is to know you, to experience the force and power of our creator, that’s our desire.
So that we can be better fathers, we can be better sisters, we can be better mothers, we can be better fathers, aunts, uncles, and above all, just better citizens of this kingdom.
So we thank you for all that you are doing, and we are just going to do, as we look into this world. We bless you and only you, in Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
If you are joining us for the first time, this month of May, all the way to June 8th, we are tracking the life of Jesus after he was resurrected, and also as the disciples, all await for the Holy Spirit to fall on Pentecost, which was 50 days after Jesus resurrected.
And our prayer is that as we follow on this journey, that at the end of this 50 days, we will also experience the same thing, because we know that what we read in the Scripture are not stories that we can attain to, but rather they are stories that are given to us a reference point of what the Lord can do and is willing to do through us or in us.
So today we are in 1 Samuel 10, and this chapter is how King Saul was installed as the King of Israel by the great prophet Samuel. We are going to start in verse 6, but I encourage you today if you can read this whole entire chapter, because it really sets a foundation of how God operates, especially when he installs leaders.
So Samuel tells Saul what's going to happen, and in verse 6 it says, the Spirit of the Lord, first let’s start in 5. After that you go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.
As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying.
The Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, will come powerfully upon you and you will prophesy with them, and you will be changed into a different person.
Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do for God is with you. For a few minutes, let's kind of look into the prophetic words.
Brothers and sisters you know when you read these scriptures, especially this chapter, you hear specific words of what will happen and what is going to happen and how it should happen.
Nowadays when you hear prophetic words, they are so generic that we should question them. Prophetic words always comes to edify a person, to give them encouragement and inspiration so that they can either prepare or they can move from one place to another.
But in order to prophesy, if you actually just stop and think about it, in order to prophesy or to give a word concerning the future, it means that the Spirit of God, that fetches all things, even the deep things of God, reveals them to the person who will give the prophetic word.
So in other words, it simply means that it's all, it's impossible to prophesy without the Spirit of God. Otherwise if you do it without the Spirit of God, then it's something else, even reading palms and all kind of stuff that people do out there.
But if you are ever going to prophesy or one of the tests you should have, if somebody is giving you a prophetic word, the first question you should ask yourself is this person filled with the Holy Spirit?
Because we hear it here, say the Spirit of God will come upon you powerfully. Not just a little bit, no powerfully, Spirit of God will come upon you powerfully.
And you also, you will start to prophesy with those who are already in this prophetic movement.
So prophecy cannot happen without the Spirit of God being present, because when you really just stop and think about it, how can that happen without it? How can anybody knows the mind of God without the Spirit of God?
Because in order to reveal anything that will happen in the future, there has to be the Spirit of God present, otherwise we will never know.
So if we are to hear prophetic words and if anybody ever comes to prophesy to you, you have to check if they are filled, powerfully, with the Spirit of God.
Otherwise, this is just generic, this is why, and the problem too I have with the church. And I'm not talking about people who preach here, I'm talking about hearers, is that most times when you hear prophetic words, we never come back to check or ask, hey, this way was spoken on this particular day, whatever happened to it.
But rather we just go on and desire another prophetic word, and never, never check the results of what was prophesied, but here in this chapter you see a meticulous coloration between what happened and what was said.
But as for us, since we are looking at the Holy Spirit, verse 6 says, the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them, and you will be changed into a different person.
In other words, you cannot experience and encounter with the Holy Spirit and remain the same. Again, it is important for us to know these things, so that when you encounter the Holy Spirit, you should automatically know that I am going to be changed and I will be a different person after this,
Because how the new encounter Christ and encounter God, encounter the Holy Spirit and not be changed, you have to be changed. Remember who the Holy Spirit is, we should never, ever forget that the world was created by the Holy Spirit.
That the Holy Spirit inspired writers to write scriptures, that the Holy Spirit is the one that impregnated Mary with Jesus, so this is a powerful entity, this is the power. Again, the Spirit of God will come upon you powerfully, and you will prophesy with them.
Not only will you prophesy, but you also, you are going to be changed, you can’t encounter the Holy Spirit and remain the same.
It’s impossible, because you have experienced the power that you might have never experienced before, and again, every encounter you will have with the Holy Spirit will change you.
So I want all of us to understand that in order to prophesy, which is to give a word, to chaining to the future, the Spirit of God has to come upon you powerfully. And so also help us to protect ourselves from words and people who claim to be prophesying when they are not prophesying,
Because I will tell you this brothers and sisters, a word that is called a prophetic word without the Spirit of God accompanying it is very dangerous, and sometimes extremely expensive, because you will find yourself doing things that you should be doing in the name of the Lord, until you realize that the Spirit of God is not with you.
Because without the Spirit of God, you can't, most times, find the things that the Lord is pushing you to do, that you claim the Lord is pushing you to do the Spirit without measure, so our desire, you and I, your desire, is that the Spirit of God should come upon us powerfully.
If we are to inspire the future, if we have to pray for our children pertaining things that will come into the future, the Spirit of God is to come powerfully upon us. If we are to give inspirational words about what we want to see through the Lord God.
Then the Spirit of God has to come upon us powerfully, and when that happens, it will change you, it will change you as a person, you cannot remain the same.
I think it's important that we read verse 8, and you can't see what I'm talking about, it goes on to say, God, down ahead of me to give God.
I will surely come down to you to sacrifice bent offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.
It doesn't say you must come, you must wait for a period of time, because what will be a period of time, the period is specific, you wait seven days until I come, very specific.
And then in verse 9, says and Saul tend to leave Samuel. God changed Sauls heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. Verse 10, when he and these servants arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets made him.
The Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined the men prophesying in their prophesying, when all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other.
What is this that has happened to the Son of Kish? He saw also among the prophets. Everything that was said, it was going to happen, happened. The way it was supposed to happen.
This is how we interact with the Spirit of God. That the whole Spirit is specific in his interactions with you. He is not trying to figure it out. He is not trying to give you a maybe word. No, he knows all things.
He knows the mind of God. He knows things to come. So he is not trying to figure it out and give you, this is why we need the Holy Spirit, because he knows all things. And when it comes powerfully upon a person, you are going to be changed and everything you hear is going to be specific.
So in our quest of receiving the Holy Spirit, we have to have a greater understanding of knowing that when He shows up, He is going to give specific directions. He is not going to make it up. He is going to give us specific directions.
When He encounters you powerfully, He will give you specific directions and instructions in counsel. This is how our interaction with the Holy Spirit is supposed to look like this chapter here.
Brothers and sisters we were given by God a gift of the man called the Holy Spirit, which is the power that searches things that are unspeakable, which is the power that creates, that heals, that does the most powerful things, but yet invisible.
You will see its effect, but you cannot see it with your own eyes, but you will see the effect behind the body spirit. That is what was given to us as a gift, to walk with, to counsel, to come upon us, to fill us powerfully.
So when we walk around and we say, oh man, sorry, so is powerful, we are wrong in that the Holy Spirit has come powerfully upon the person. We should all desire these encounters with the Holy Spirit.
This should be our daily desires, not once in a while desire, our daily desires. Lord, powerfully fill me, so I can have insight, so I can have wisdom, so I can have a greater understanding of things, so that you can calm me down from things that seem threatening.
That is why the scripture says, we ever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit of God is saying. Not what man is saying, what the Spirit of God is saying. The Spirit of God will come upon you powerfully, and you’ll prophesy, not only that, you will also be changed.
So brothers and sisters, this is an incredible statute of our kingdom, the interaction between us and the Holy Spirit. It is part of the culture of the kingdom of God. If we are to, this is the Constitution, this is how we operate, this is how we function in this kingdom.
This incredible relationship with the Holy Spirit, because even you are to look at what we are doing, we are trying to walk the same journey that the disciples walked to Pentecost. And the instruction pertaining what they will do, and what they will become, was before you even do anything, all the things I have instructed you to do.
All the power I gave you, message item number 10, all the things I told you greater works will you do than I did. All these things I have instructed you to do until my return, will not happen until this one particular event happens go wait on me.
If today's after resurrection, when I am gone, the promise, my Father, the gift that God has given you money, who come upon you. And after that, go on and bring this gospel to the entire world. But in order to do it, you have to wait to be filled powerfully.
If it happens to these men, and God is showing us the methodology, then it also has to happen this way to all of us. It has to happen this way for all of us. We should never ever get to a place where we think we know.
The day you do that, is the day the Holy Spirit will sit on the sidelines, and watch you. Quick story, and then we will pray. Years ago, I was invited to preach in Florida and I had preached this message numerous times.
You know how you have, at least I know, I have a volt of messages, and some messages that I like the most for whatever reason, because they either really contextualize who I am in Christ. So this is one of my favorite messages to preach, thou art the Christ, and I have preached this message numerous times.
And this is what I was going to preach. So I go on to Florida, get there, and we are there, we're hanging out, and obviously, or mistakenly, I decided I wasn't really going to study that much since I know this message in my head.
So I took it for granted and I know every way I preach this message, it just touched people, it just touched me. But on that particular day brothers and sisters, there's one thing I forgot, I forgot to engage the Holy Spirit.
So I go up there, start reading the scriptures. And literally, I felt my mouth dry and that's the first time I have ever felt standing on the throughput alone, with no aid or help on the Holy Spirit.
And I'm looking down to the congregation, and they are looking at me very weird. And by the time I hit the 5th, 10th minute mark, I literally was wishing to end this message right there. At the point I almost said, should I ask, can I start over?
Because the Spirit of God was not present, it simply just sat on the sideline and was watching. That was one of the longest 30 minutes of my life. And I learned a valuable lesson that particular day.
If you try to do anything in this kingdom without the aid of the Holy Spirit, you are going to fail. Ask Peter, ask the disciples, before the Holy Spirit was pulled out, they will tell you, they tried to pass the boy the devil out of the boy and they could not do it.
So in our desire to contribute, to be workers in this kingdom, to be part of this kingdom, to uphold the values of this kingdom, in all that we desire to do. Verse 6 should be our verse. The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you powerfully and you will prophesy.
So whether you are teaching Bible study, whether you are about to sing, whether you are about to pray, remember this verse, the spirit of God has to come upon me powerfully. It should be a simple prayer, Lord, let your spirit come upon me powerfully.
So I can do what you are calling me to do. Let us pray, Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. In fact, we cannot thank you enough that we have this incredible advantage, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit that would come and fill us up.
That it chooses to indulge us, to come our way, and cover us so that we can experience the essence of God's power. That we are grateful that the power that created this world, that gave birth to Jesus, that wrote these scriptures through inspiration, that power that God has made it possible for us to be filled by it.
So we can do greater works than you did. So we are grateful for this gift, that councils, that teaches, that direct, that heals, that creates. So I pray, Lord, in all our endeavors, that may you continue to reveal yourself powerfully through us.
For the many plans and many ideas that we have, Father we look to this verse, as a reference point of how we would do anything, first be filled by the Spirit of God and second we do.
May we never forget, or may we never take for granted, that which he has set as a way of doing things in this kingdom. I pray, Lord, in our desire to grow, open our eyes, open our ears. Give us greater understanding as we continue to serve you.
I pray for my brothers and sisters in this prayer call, strengthen them in their efforts, strengthen them in their desires. The desires in their hearts, you know them, you place them there.
So I pray, Lord, may our efforts be filled with this powerful gift of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for wisdom, to follow the guidelines and instructions of the Holy Spirit, and unstack our ears so that we can carefully hear you.
We bless you God and we honor you. We ask that you lead us this week into triumph and procession as we continue to walk this journey out. We bless every family represented here, we bless those who are on their way to work, we bless their workplaces.
May you fill them while they are on the job, so that somebody someone gets to believe. If there is anybody sick amongst us, we pray for healing, let your Holy Spirit do only what it can do. So Lord, we continue to look to you.
Now as we start this week, guide us, inspire us, and as we go through this day, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For thy is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever, Amen.
Brothers and sisters verse 6, the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and he will prophesy. May you all have a wonderful day.
