"Waiting On The Holy Spirit - Getting Our Hearts Ready for Pentecost"
"Acts 1:12-14 The Upper Room Meeting"
Good morning, good morning, everybody. I hope you had a wonderful evening, well rested, ready for Friday and ready for the weekend. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Heavenly Father we come before you today. We thank you for your grace.
We thank you for your love. We thank you not for who you are to us our Father. And we thank you for this privilege that we have to call you our Father and we are your children. So far as we come before you this morning our desire is to continuously grow in you.
To find wisdom, to find strength, to find courage, to find boldness, to find life from the words of these scriptures, for your word says my words are like.
So we pray, Lord, that as we continue each day, commune with you to read our scriptures, to do all the necessary things that are important for sustenance in this Kingdom, I pray, Lord, that your spirit continue Lord to strengthen us.
The spirit continue to help us in our endeavors and everything else that we are desiring to accomplish and to do in this lifetime. So we pray for grace, we pray for mercy. We pray a lot for boldness.
We pray for love to endure and our faith to endure and we thank you, Lord, that in the midst of all the things that are going on around us, we find comfort in knowing that Christ is the solid rock that we stand on.
That Christ is the strong tower we can run into him and find safety. So we thank you for all these things that you have put in place in order for us to live successful lives in this Kingdom because of these statues that you've put in place.
Look at the word. We pray, Lord, that may our mind continue to be transformed. We continue to be renewed by the transforming of our mind through the word of God and our faith grow because we know faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God.
So Father as we hear this word may we grow and may we attain to the full measure of the individuals you have called us to be. So we bless you for this fellowship. We bles you for this moment that we have every morning coming together in fellowship with the spirit and with you.
We pray, Lord, that we continue to be blessed in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen. Today we are in the book of Acts in chapter 1. And this is the crux of the matter.
This is the chapter that is the center of everything that we are on. So we are in Acts 1. And we're going to focus on verse 12 to 14. But I think it's important that we kind of start from verse 1:14.
The former account I made out here for this to all that Jesus began both to do and to teach until the day which he was taken up. After he through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the Apostles whom he had chosen to whom he had also presented himself alive after his suffering.
By many infallible proofs being seen by them during 40 days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. And it began assembled together within he commanded them to not to pass from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which he had said here.
You have heard from me for John truly baptized with water. That we shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Therefore when they come together, they ask him saying, Lord, will you at this time restore the Kingdom of Israel?
And he said to them, it is not for you to know the times or the season which the Father is put in his own authority. But you will shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.
And you shall be my witness to me in Jerusalem and in all of Judea and Samaria to the end of the world. Now, when he has spoken these things while they watched, he was taken up, he was taken up.
And the cloud received him out of air sight, and while they looked stared fastly towards heaven as he went up, behold, 2 men stood before them in white apparel. Who say men of Galilee why do you stand gazing up into the heavens?
The same Jesus who was taken from him into heaven, who so come in like manner as you saw him go into heaven, they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem Sabbath day journey.
And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room here they were staying. Peter James, John, Andrew, Phillip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James, the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers. So we have the account of what Jesus began to do in the 40 days before he was taken up.
And the instruction that the disciples got, they got through the Holy Spirit, through Jesus speaking of the things they needed to do. And that you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
And you will receive power from that and they all gathered in the upper room, where they were constantly praying and something was coming. They have no idea what this thing is because this event has never taken place ever in human history.
But they are taking heed to the instructions that Jesus has given them. An instruction was something is coming. Wait for it because you are going to receive power and authority.
They don't know what that is. You have no idea what that is. There's no reference point to what that is because remember, in Matthew 10 Jesus had taught them prior to this event that I give you power to cast out their devils.
And they tried to cast out devils and they struggled with it and then they come and ask Jesus, how come we can cast out these devils? And Jesus says to them this kind comes out by prayer and fasting.
This second time they gave the instruction that you're going to be filled with the Holy Spirit and you're going to receive power and you will be my witness in Judea and Samaria and throughout this whole entire world and they have no idea what that looks like.
Their response to this commandment was to gather around in the upper room. Everybody present accounted for with all the women and Mary. And they were all and the scripture says they constantly prayed in one accord.
They constantly prayed in one accord. Now for us the reason why scripture were written to us was 1, as a reference point then 2, as instructions of what to do when we are faced with the same situations that the predecessors of this movement of this Christian faith.
They show us what they did when they were in the situation that we find ourselves in. That's why the Scriptures were written to us. What is something that we will enjoy of course we're going to enjoy them, but something that we ought to emulate or principles that we have to follow.
If we find ourselves in the same situation that these people were in. So which means when we are following instructions and waiting on the Holy Spirit. We see the precedence.
The precedence was constant prayer and coming together in one accord. So next week June 8th Pentecostal Sunday we're going to gather around. Just as much as they gathered around.
And this week, this coming week, starting Monday. We are praying people, we are always in prayer. I'm sure you've heard me say this over and over again, constantly praying constantly read scriptures, wherever you find yourself, whether you're driving or doing whatever you when you get a moment, constantly pray.
So we are trying to build a culture. So that when situations and moments like this come to us. We are not trying to do something that we are not already doing. So it's easy for us now to say next week we want to constantly pray.
As we wait for our own moment in times, for the Holy Spirit to fill us, we already have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. But we are now asking the Lord to fill us. Why? Because there are things that we need to do and some things you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
That's why you see in the scriptures it says Peter while full of the Holy Spirit. Steven while full of the Holy Spirit, Philip while full of the Holy Spirit, he began to preach in Samaria. And the whole city was taken for Christ.
Why? Because he was full of the Holy Spirit. We have the indwelling of this spirit already. That we are looking to the field with the Holy Spirit. But the instruction that Jesus gave his disciples was go wait for what my Father is about to give you.
Power and authority to preach this gospel in Samaria and the cities around and throughout this whole entire world. And their attitude after that instruction was to gather in one accord and constantly praying.
Because they have no idea what was coming. But the preparation was even if we don't know what's coming, the preparation was to be in one accord and pray. So next week, Sunday we have no idea what the Lord is going to do for us, how he is going to show up what he is going to bring when he shows up.
We have no idea what kind of power that God is going to give us to the disciples, he gave them power to preach the gospel in Judea, Samaria, and throughout the world.
We don't know what we are going to be given power to do that even if we don't, the preparation that we have to have is to be in one accord and to constantly pray.
So that we are ready for what he will give us, for what he will empower us to do. So this coming week take as much time as you can in your day to constantly pray to remain in the attitude of prayer. As we have set this time for the Lord to come and commune with us.
So starting Sunday constantly in prayer. Whenever you get a little moment here, pray and let's all be in one accord as we await for the filling of the Holy Spirit. I am sure this appointed time that we have set aside.
That in the heavens the Lord has marked it and he desire to come and indulge with us. But we want our hearts, our minds, our spirit to be ready. And how do we get ready to constantly remain in prayer.
So as you go throughout your day-to-day remaining the attitude of prayer. When you get a little moment here and there. Say a few little words in prayer and set expectations in your heart of what the Lord can do for you and with you.
Expect the Lord to meet you, expect it. These men and women, they were expecting something even though they had no idea what it was. But they were expecting it that's why they remained and they stayed in prayer constantly on one accord.
That's why Jesus came back and spent 40 extra days with them to make sure that they were in one accord and they are ready for what the Lord was going to pour out in the book of Acts in chapter 2.
So starting today attitude of prayer. We are already praying people but we know Sunday is coming and the Lord has something for us. We don't know what it is but we're going to do the best of our ability and be diligent in preparing our hearts, our minds, our souls, to commune with the Father, Amen.
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, our blessed Redeemer, words cannot express the magnitude of who you are. We find ourselves standing here today as a community of believers having been brought together by your spirit.
We know if it was left to us, we couldn't write such a story. But the fact that we have gathered together for years and you've allowed us and given us a space in your Kingdom to exercise our gifts and talents that you have given us is such a remarkable fit that we know it is you who’s made this possible.
So as we set times to commune with you and to commune with one another. As we gather together in fellowship, our belief is that you have already set and marked this day in the heavens for we did not see this coming.
But we are here now through your guiding through your leading and through your spirit. So I pray, Lord, that as we ready our minds and our souls and our spirits to hear from you and to be filled by the Holy Spirit.
May we play our role and our part in preparation for that which you will send to help us in all that we desire to do. We see the precedence that you set in the scriptures.
We see what took place with the privilege of having this reference point of what you are capable of doing with those who permit themselves to the status of your Kingdom.
So we are praying, Lord, that as we commit ourselves to do what we know to do, our belief is that God, you will fill us with the Holy Spirit. So we can have an experience that others have experienced before.
So we can enjoy these statutes that you made available for us in this Kingdom. We know what to do, but our eyes are on you. We pray Lord that you will give us instructions to guide us in the journey I ahead. And Lord in the calendar of our lives, we want to commemorate this day because we understand how valuable this is for humanity and for all of us.
The feeling of the Holy Spirit. We pray, Lord for that day June 8th. That as you visit us as you feel us and the gifts of the spirit be present for all of us to enjoy. May the fruits of the spirit be present for all of us to enjoy.
I pray for every single person who attend and who will come together. Even those who are who won't be there, but who will join us in their hearts, wherever they will be that God may their experience and made this encounter adds to our experience is with you.
May this encounter embolden us to do those things that seem to be impossible. For those who might have never experienced such a thing. I pray for an incredible exposure to what you are capable of doing, so that our faith is enhanced.
For those who desire healing, the Scriptures tells us that your spirit was present and it healed them all. So we are looking to this day with great expectation. We know our efforts have no meaning if your presence is not there.
If we who can give good gifts to our children, what more of our Father in heaven? When we ask can do for us. So Lord, we table before you now our request to send your Holy Spirit for this particular event that we have set on our calendars, for you to come and fill every single one of us.
As we commune with you and as we commune with one another. As we go throughout this day and the rest of the coming days before June 8th, I pray that we will remain in the attitude of prayer and an attitude of expectation for we believe with all our hearts that you are a good Father.
Who’ll fill us with the gift of the Holy Spirit. As we go through this day, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one, for thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
For the rest of the week, brothers and sisters, the rest of the weekend constantly remain in an attitude of prayer. Raise your expectations for God, who surely meet us because his promises are yay and Amen.
May the Lord bless you, may you have an incredible weekend. And I'm sure some of our kids are on summer break now. We continue to pray for them that as they grow, as they enjoy themselves as they rest from school.
That no harm and danger will be fall on them. That God, you continue to bless them in all they desire to do. And Father, I pray that for our children, even on this particular day, when they come to be with us.
May they experience something that will alter and change the course of their lives. Pray for your grace to abound and will pray for your peace to abound. Now be with us as we go through this day and the weekend. May the Lord bless you, we will see you on Sunday for Bible study in Jesus name, Amen.
