The Qualities Of God As Revealed In His Names

"Exodus 17: 15-16 - Jehovah Nissi, The Lord Is Our Banner"

Good morning, family. So glad to be here with you this morning on this beautiful day. I thank God for the privilege of coming before you and bringing the word that the Lord has given me to help you through this day as we closeout this week.

I'm not usually the closer, but I am ready for the challenge today and I know that the God that we serve will guide me in all that I will say so let's go before him this day in prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you and thank you for this day.

Thank you for your wonderful new mercies and new grace that you have given us this day to walk in and to live by. We pray Father for your will to be done this day according to the will that you have placed in each of us.

And that you will cover us through the blood in all that we do this day, especially for your Kingdom. We thank you, Father, that you have saved us from certain destruction and chosen us to be here this morning on this call from us. We know that this is something that you enjoy.

This is something that you take pleasure in, that we would wake in the morning and give you praise and honor from our lips to devote time to spend with you and be with you in spirit and in truth.

So thank you, Father, for again leading us this day, giving us the breath of life and waking us up to be able to spend some time with you. Now as we go forth in this teaching, I pray Father that it not come from me, but that it come from you.

That through Holy Spirit lead me to speak the words that you would have me to speak. Give me the truths that you want your family, your children to learn and apply in their lives. I pray for your spirit to take control now move me aside and take control of this your meeting.

Your devotion that we have set aside for you this morning, we praise your holy name we thank you and it's in Jesus name that we pray, Amen, Amen family. So for the benefit of those that may only be joining us today.

This month we have been in a season of learning the names of God and their meanings and so far we have covered 12 of the different names of God, the first name that we learned the meaning of was Abba, which is Father. Emmanuel, which is God with us, Adonai which is Lord or Master, Elohim, which is God's creator, mighty and strong.

Elion, which is most high. El Roi, which is God of seeing. El Olam, which is everlasting God El Gibbor, which is mighty God. This week, we also learned the names El Shaddai, which is God Almighty.

El Kannah, which is consuming fire, jealous God, Yahweh, Jehovah, which is I am who I am Jehovah Jireh, which is the Lord will provide. Today we're going to learn about the name Jehovah Nissi and what it means.

Our subject scripture for today's teaching comes from the Book of Exodus, Chapter 17:15-16, but I want to read from verse 8 So that we have a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding and leading up to our subject versus.

The background of the name Jehovah Nissi involves the Israelites wandering in the desert after leaving their bodies in Egypt.

God led them to the land of Canaan. It was here that the Israelites contended with Moses because they were thirsty and had no water, and Moses cried out to God.

What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me, and God commanded Moses to strike the rock with his rod, and it allowed water to come out of the rocks so that people may drink.

Verse seven goes on to say Moses called the name of the place Massa and Meribah because of the contention of the children of Israel and because they tempted the Lord, saying is the Lord among us or not. It was at this time they were attacked by the Amalekites.

A powerful and warlike group of Wanderers. Verse 8 reads now Amalekites came and fought with Israel in referendum. And Moses said to Joshua choose us some men and go out fight with Amalekites tomorrow.

I will stand on top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. So Joshua did as Moses said to him and fought with Amalekites and Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand, Amalekites prevailed.

When Moses's hands became heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one-on-one side and the other on the other side. As his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Then the Lord said to Moses, write this for memorial in the book, and recount it in the hearing of Joshua.

That I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalekites from under heaven and our subject verse for today verses 15:16 says, and Moses built an altar and called its name the Lord is my banner.

For he said because the Lord has sworn the Lord will have war with Amalekites from generation to generation. This is the first time that this name is used for God in the Bible, Jehovah, Nissi, or more properly known as Yahweh Nissi.

It means the Lord is our banner in Hebrew. The Lord is my banner, what does that mean? A banner is something that identifies and unifies a particular group of people. For example, a military flag or standard is sometimes called a banner.

The Israelites saying the Lord is my banner was a way of identifying themselves as the unified followers of the Lord God. A banner also functions as a rallying point for troops in battle.

The altar Moses built in Exodus Chapter 17 marked the place where God intervened on behalf of his people and promised to utterly defeat his enemies. Another book, Psalms in the Book of Psalms, verse 20 chapter 20. Rather verse 5 says.

May we shop for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of God. In verses 6-8, we also read now this I know the Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand.

Some trust in Chariots, some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their needs and fall but we rise up and stand firm. God's people continue to say the Lord is my banner because it is in his power that our enemies are vanquished.

You can also read in Psalm 60: 4-5 that it says you, David, this is David. You have given a banner to those who fear you that it might be displayed because of the truth that your beloved may be delivered save with your right hand and hear me.

Again, this was the prayer of David for the restored favor of God after Joab returned and killed 12,000 Edomites in the valley of the salt. The Lord is our banner in that he is the one under whom we unite. He is our savior.

We are rescued by him and identified in him. As the war between Israel and the Amalekites raged on, we can assume that as Moses held up the rod of God, he was praying for the success of the Israelite troops below him.

So Moses lifting the rod can be seen here as a picture of intercessory prayer. In James Chapter 5:16, it says the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Prayer is the most powerful weapon that we can use, especially on behalf of others.

When we seek God's glory and not our own. The way in which the battle was won with the Amalekites left no doubt as to who was responsible for the victory. Only as the rod of God was held out did the Israelites prevail.

The battle was not won by military might or superior battle plans. It was won by the Power of God. The battle is the Lords, as referenced in first Samuel 17:47, which is where David responded to the challenge of Goliath in full confidence and belief that God would fight the battle for him and will bring the victory.

In this matchup, David would represent Israel in warfare against the giant Philistine. David comes not as a seasoned warrior, but as a faithful believer in the name of the Lord. In verse 45, David declares he will strike down Goliath and decapitate him by that power.

Two reasons are given here why God will grant this victory. The 1st is that the entire earth will know that God is in Israel. The second reason is so that everyone gathered on the field of battle will know that battles are not won by military tools or even by men.

God does not need the human advantages of better weapons or more soldiers or heavy armor. The Lord has all the power he needs to give victory to his people simply because he is the Lord.

As the Lord later told Zerubbabel through the prophet Zacharias, not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts Zachariah 4:6.

God is almighty and all powerful. In Exodus 17, where our verse for today comes from, the hands and rod of Moses was held up in the same way that soldiers pulled up their flags in the time of battle.

As these flags bear the Insignia of the country, the soldiers are set to fight under that banner. The Israelites fought under the direction of God, Jehovah, Nissi. It was under the Lord's banner and with his aid they fought and in his name and strength they conquered.

During the battle with the Amalekites. Moses's weariness, which is evidenced by the lowering of his hands, also illustrates the truth that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak is referenced in Mark 14:38.

We can't fight in our own strength. We have to let God fight for us. We only need to be faithful and available. After the victory, Moses named the altar Jehovah Nissi, which is also a reminder to believers of every generation that we can only be victorious as we honor the name of the Lord and rally to him as our banner.

We can't take credit for the Lord's victories in our lives. We can't take God's glory for ourselves. However, we can bask in the glory of God for the victories he has won in our lives.

We can rally under his banner and give him praise and thanksgiving for leading us through our battles to victories, overcoming this world as Jesus did.

Letting him fight our battles and being confident as David was that he will give us the victory if we trust and believe he is Jehovah Nissi in our lives now and always.

So is God your banner? Are you rallied under the banner of God for the wars that you must fight? Does Jehovah Nissi fight your battles? Or do you fight your own? We know that our weapons are not carnal, but spiritual.

If you are fighting your own battles in the flesh, you will not win. Our battles are not fleshly but spiritual, and for that we need the full armor of God as stated in Ephesians 6:13-17 which reads.

Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground after you have done everything to stand.

Stand firm then with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the Gospel of peace.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

Remember as Jehovah Nissi did for Moses and the Israelites, he will do the same for us. We only need to trust in his promise and stand under his banner using the spiritual provisions that he has given us.

So in summary trust God to fight our battles. Make yourself available for use by God. Use the spiritual armor that God has given us. Use intercessory prayer in our weapon or spiritual for spiritual warfare, praying for others. Rally under the banner of God, Jehovah, Nissi, and watch the victory come. Let's pray family.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your words today, that touch our hearts and minds. We thank you, Father, knowing that you are Jehovah Nissi in our lives. Knowing that you fight our battles that you lift our hands and glory to you so that our enemies can be vanquished.

We thank you, Father, that as we rally under your banner that you shelter us, you protect us and there is nothing that we need to do in this regard but be faithful to your calling and be available for your service.

We thank you, Father that you have given us the confidence as you gave David to walk in faith and not by sight. To be led by Holy Spirit and all the things that you would require of us to do, all we need to do is hear what the spirit is saying.

We thank you, Father, that you were so merciful and so kind and so loving that, even as we were sinners, you loved us and sent your son to die on our behalf. So it's with gratitude. It's with humble hearts that we come to you this day thanking you for your words of encouragement.

Thanking you, Father that as these current days turn to be dark. That all that we see is not truth, but what we don't see is true, and that is that in the spiritual realm you are fighting for our behalf. In the spiritual realm that we don't see, there is a war going on.

And that we now know that it's only through the armor of God that we will be able to fight spiritual battles, that these battles are not fought on the battlegrounds of man, that these are not fought in a fleshly environment, but in a spiritual environment.

Using those tools that you have given us to pray in spirit and in truth not just for the things that we want and need, but for the benefit of others. So we thank you, Father, that again you are showing us the way that you would have us to walk.

That you are leading us in righteousness, that you are causing us to walk in a straight path to victory. So thank you again, Father, for your grace, your mercy, and for considering us because who are we that you would even look at us.

But we know, Father, that through our Lord and Savior, Jesus through his blood our robes have been washed clean and it's through that cleanness that you see us as your children reconciled to you.

So yes, you will protect us. You will provide shelter under your wings. You will allow us to walk under your banner Jehovah Nissi for our protection and for your glory and for the victory of the battles that we will undoubtedly face as we get closer to the return of our Lord and savior.

So again, thank you for the privilege and honor being called your children. Thank you for the privilege and honor of allowing us to be sons of the most high. Thank you that you call us worthy.

Thank you that we have you as our ABBA Father. Thank you again for this day. Thank you for the peace that you give us. Thank you for the love that you give us and show us each and every day, followed by sparing us, by waking us, by giving us the breath of life, by protecting us from certain doom and danger.

By giving us all that we need and providing Jehovah Jireh. We thank you now as we go forth in this day, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for yours is the Kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever in Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Amen family, I pray that God has blessed you this day with this word, knowing that Jehovah Nissi fights your battles, that you don't have to go out and fight the battle yourself, that you only need to show up, be available, and be faithful, and God will win the battle for you.

God bless you. Have a wonderful day, a wonderful weekend. Go in peace and know that God loves you. God bless you.
